My speedometer is now reading 12mph too slow. Why?

My speedometer has decided it doesn't like to work properly anymore. It seems to measure my speed too slow by a factor of 20 km/h. (ABout 12 mph). Of course, since my speedo doesn't work properly I don't know for absolute sure, but it *feels* like that's about the differential.

I have had the same wheels and tire size for two years, so changing to bro truck tires did not cause this (I don't have bro truck tires, but I thought I would head this off at the pass).

What would cause this? The needle also seems to like to stick when I accelerate and not move in a linear fashion. I drive a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier. Any ideas oppo? My odometer is still accurate.

Awesome a vent a door wallpaper for your time.

Sounds like your car has a cable driven speedometer gear which has stripped a couple of teeth.

On a scale of 1-10 (10 being automatic transmission rebuild levels of expenditures and difficulty) how hard is it to put on a new one? It seems difficult.

Yes actually. This would explain the other symptom which has been occurring for a while, which is gas gauge failure.

Given my LCD is also failing, this means one thing. Time for a new instrument panel!

it will be whatever value the replacement will be, but I am sure it is possible to set it to the same number as the original.

03 Cavalier had a digital odometer reading, doesn't it? I'm pretty sure it will change to what is stored in the ecu. Otherwise you should legally note somewhere that the odometer reading on the instrument panel does not match up with the miles on the car.

Yes it does have a digital odometer reading. I was going to say that if it just changes to the replacement value it's pretty easy for anyone to knock miles off of a car. Not that my car has any resale value, but if it did.

GM hasn't used a cabled speedo since the early 90's I believe. He should have a VSS.

Late '80's Fords had VSS as well, but had the gear on the end which wen into the tailshaft of the transmission housing. I would think that in 2003 that was all digitized for GM.....

I sincerely wish you had bro-truck tires on your cav.

That would be fun. My current tires are worn out. I should go full bro next summer.
